The Sinharaja Rainforest, located in south west low land wet zone, is one of the UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka. This landscape encompasses just over 11000 hectares of land and most of the forest contained with in the borders of Rathnapura district and other parts include Galle and Kaluthara districts. It is a habitat to over 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic species of mammals and butterflies, insects, reptiles and rare amphibians. More than half of the trees are considered as endemic.
Bird watching in this rainforest is a significant and enthusiastic activity because it consist 95% of the endemic birds of Sri Lanka. It is the last remaining uninterrupted evergreen forest in Sri Lanka. The hike in Singharaja offers the opportunity to explore the biodiversity in the ecosystem. This is the best place to explore the coexistence of plants and animals and observe the bio diversity.
Out of overall great bird population in the forest, 33 species are endemic to Sri Lanka. The rich reptile population and hundreds of insect species can be witnessed. It is home to the mammals such as purple faced langur monkey, giant squirrel and the leopards which can be hardly seen. Exploring sinharaja on foot would make your experience more enthusiastic and memorable. It is recommended to start the sinharaja hike from Deniyaya Mederipitiya to the East or Kudawa to the North.
