UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988. Currently, the reserve spans 8864 hectares and the country plans to quadruple the size of the area to respect the ecological significance of the region.

The Sinharaja Rainforest is one of the UNESCO world heritage sites in Sri Lanka. It is a habitat to over 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic species of mammals and butterflies, insects, reptiles and rare amphibians. More than half of the trees are considered as endemic.
